    Foreign exchange trading

    Forex trading is the buying and selling of foreign currencies. People trade in forex either to try to make a quick profit by betting on the changing value of a currency or to provide certainty about the cost of future foreign currency payments (called ‘hedging’).The risk of online foreign exchange trading is high.     The FMA editorial team talks about managed funds in this article. “A balanced fund usually has moderate risk, so you’re not risking as much uncertainty of achieving your investing goals or as much potential for loss by being in one. But remember to check your fund type is still good for your situation – if you’re getting closer to retirement or buying that first home, it’s time to start thinking about a more conservative fund.”

    Temporary extension for certain reporting deadlines

    The FMA is providing temporary relief to eligible entities a one-month extension to file their audited financial statements and comply with certain related reporting deadlines. The relief is available for eligible entities with balance dates between 31 March 2021 and 31 December 2021. Some conditions apply.

    Rise in scams impersonating NZ businesses during COVID-19

    From 1 April to 5 November 2020, the FMA issued 61 warnings about investment scams, of which 21 (or 34%) were impostor scams, where the names and details of legitimate businesses are unlawfully used by scammers to trick investors, such as fake websites or social media accounts. By comparison, in the same timeframe during 2019, the FMA issued 40 warnings and only four (10%) were impostor scams. Read the media release.

    Fund managers’ inconsistent performance measurement and cost of fees reduces benefits to investors

    The managers of New Zealand managed investment schemes (MIS or KiwiSaver/fund managers) are showing repeatable performance, relative to appropriate market indices. However, the benefits of their skill to investors in some funds is reduced by fees, and the costs of commission paid by managers to third parties.
