    Consultation on KiwiSaver fees methodology

    KiwiSaver members will be able to see the dollar cost of the fees they are paying in their annual statements next year. The Ministry of Business and Innovation and Employment (MBiE) is currently amending the Financial Markets Conduct Regulations so that individual members’ total fees must be disclosed in annual statements in dollar values, from March 2018.

    The FMA completes Memorandum of Understanding with all NZ’s Dispute Resolution Schemes

    FMA has recently signed MOUs with the ISO and the BOS. This follows the completion of MOUs with the FDRS and FSCL last year. The FMA and the dispute resolution schemes already enjoy a cooperative relationship and these MOUs formalise and enhance that collaboration.

    Momentum builds in KiwiSaver as scheme reaches $81 billion

    The Financial Markets Authority (FMA) – Te Mana Tātai Hokohoko – has released its KiwiSaver Annual Report based on providers’ statistics for the year ended March 2021, which shows total funds under management reached $81.6 billion, or double the $40.8 billion held in 2017.

    FMA accuses CEO of market manipulation for anonymous posts on investor forum

    The Financial Markets Authority (FMA) - Te Mana Tātai Hokohoko – has filed civil High Court proceedings against Matthew Geoffrey Hill, the Chief Executive Officer of NZX-listed New Talisman Gold Mines Limited (NTL), for alleged information-based market manipulation and making false and misleading representations. The case relates to anonymous posts Mr Hill made about the company on the Sharetrader website’s online investor forum.

    FMA confirms date for transitional licensing applications

    The Financial Markets Authority (FMA) today announced it will start accepting transitional licence applications from 4 November 2019. Anyone providing financial advice to retail clients from June 2020 (the start of the new regime) will need to operate under a Financial Advice Provider Transitional Licence. Advisers can either get their own licence or work on behalf of someone else who holds a licence.

    Start to new licensing regime for financial advice

    The Financial markets Authority (FMA) welcomes the start of the new financial advice regime from 15 March 2021. Under the new regime, anyone who gives regulated financial advice to retail clients must either hold, or operate under, a Financial Advice Provider licence. All providers of financial advice are now subject to the same obligation to place the interests of their clients first and must adhere to a new Code of Conduct.

    Standards for designated Financial Market Infrastructures

    The standards for designated FMIs were issued on 27 July 2023 under sections 31 and 34 of the Financial Market Infrastructures Act 2021 (the FMI Act) by the Reserve Bank of New Zealand and the Financial Markets Authority acting jointly as the regulator under section 9 of the FMI Act. The standards come into effect starting from 1 March 2024.
