    FMA accuses CEO of market manipulation for anonymous posts on investor forum

    The Financial Markets Authority (FMA) - Te Mana Tātai Hokohoko – has filed civil High Court proceedings against Matthew Geoffrey Hill, the Chief Executive Officer of NZX-listed New Talisman Gold Mines Limited (NTL), for alleged information-based market manipulation and making false and misleading representations. The case relates to anonymous posts Mr Hill made about the company on the Sharetrader website’s online investor forum.

    New law reforms the regulation of financial market infrastructures (FMIs)

    New laws to regulate and supervise payment and settlement systems have been passed by Parliament following the third reading of the Financial Market Infrastructures Bill (the Bill) yesterday. Under the Bill the Reserve Bank of New Zealand – Te Pūtea Matua (the Reserve Bank) and the Financial Markets Authority – Te Mana Tātai Hokohoko (FMA) will be joint regulators of most FMIs, including central securities depositories, securities settlement systems, central counterparties, and trade repositories. The Reserve Bank will be the sole regulator of payments systems under the new regime.

    Former Promisia chairman admits insider trading breaches

    Eoin Malcolm Miller Johnson, a former director and chairman of NZX-listed Promisia Integrative Limited (PIL), has admitted to insider trading conduct and breaching a director’s disclosure obligations. He will pay $75,000, in lieu of a penalty, to the Financial Markets Authority (FMA).

    FMA statement on Blackfort/Arena sentencing

    The FMA acknowledges the sentencing today in the Serious Fraud Office’s criminal prosecution of Mr Jimmy McNicholl and Mr Lance Ryan, also known as Lance Jared Thompson. These individuals were prosecuted in relation to a Ponzi scheme in Christchurch that resulted in hundreds of people investing a total of $8.3m.

    The FMA reports on its 12 month performance

    The Financial Markets Authority (FMA) has published its 2014 annual report for the year ended 30 June 2014. During this period the FMA began implementing the largest statutory change in financial services in 30 years. Engaging with the industry to implement the Financial Markets Conduct Act 2013(FMC Act) was one of six major achievements outlined in the report, as the FMA continued to deliver its ongoing regulatory responsibilities.
