At the FMA we are proud to support Sorted Money Month, an initiative led by Te Ara Ahunga Ora Retirement Commission in collaboration with the financial community. This year’s campaign, themed "Pause. Get Sorted," aims to help you grow your money and enhance financial resilience.

The FMA supports this initiative, as Sorted Money Month aligns with our vision: that ensures more New Zealanders feel that the financial services sector is working well for them.

You just made an important first step to getting your money sorted!  Whatever it is you want to take charge of – from budgeting and saving to paying off debt – we can point you to simple tools and practical, bite-sized tips that you can apply straight away.

Do you think money's important? Whether it's a 'yeah!' or a 'meh', it makes sense to get it sorted. This Money Month we're inviting you to hit pause and check out our handy tips and tools for getting the most out of your money, so you have more freedom to do what you truly care about.

Build a budget

You may be a wing-it kind of person but, trust us, on your money journey you’re going to want a map. Or, in this case, a budget. Setting a budget may sound hard / confronting but it’s quite the opposite. With Sorted’s Budget Planner, it’s super-simple to keep track of your money going in and out. Plus knowing exactly where every dollar goes gives you more control and, importantly, peace of mind.

Create a savings habit

Saving isn’t about giving up the things you love – it’s about moving towards the things you dream of. Having a buffer also means you’re not awake at 4am worrying about the ‘what-ifs’. Building up a fund from scratch may seem like a hill to climb, especially when there’s little left after paying for essentials. But every dollar counts, it honestly does.

Managing Debt

It can be easy to get into debt, but often harder to get out of it.

It's important to understand how much debt you are carrying and what interest you are likely to be paying on top.

Sorted has a great step-by-step guide on which debt to target first and how to whittle it down one doable bit at a time.
